Voice of the people.
Welcome
to Birmingham, Alabama, a city born from a rail road crossing in the not so distant past. Its beginnings astounded a nation by its growth and prosperity as it quickly claimed capital of the new south. Industry, wealth, and sophistication abounded on the streets of a city that buzzed and moved emphatically through a sea of a then struggling southern economy. It achieved such stunning clout in so short a time that its destiny seemed unstoppable and its heart, the downtown, unbreakable.
But battles needed to be fought for many of the very people living in our great city. Battles against injustice, segregation and racism. The protests and demonstrations that occurred on our city's streets would forever change the history of the entire nation. But in the darkest days there were those bearing the city's name that would make very poor decisions. The actions of those would send tsunami sized media shock waves to the nation showing a horrific side of our city. It was a side that would burn in the eyes of the public and ignite sarcastic whispers about our city for generations to come.
In the aftermath, many chose to abandon the city and so the city began its decline for the next fifty years. The mid 60s were the last time the city saw any increase in population.
Recently the city made the most significant progress since the fall began. Investments and growth in the downtown and southside have been snowballing within the last decade. Announcements of increasingly competitive universities, new hotels, business growth and a thriving downtown condominium market have been significant enough for many to believe that a rebirth is already underway. Can our city actually have the illustrious future that generations before had dreamt? We believe so and we want to be a part of the movement.
Birmingham grassroots is a website that is dedicated to tracking the voice of the entire region of Birmingham. We believe that those that live in the area understand how important the city of Birmingham is to the entire metropolitan area. We want to represent those that believe, that have ideas, and that want to contribute to the rebirth.
If our city becomes a forgettable ghost town that lives only in the minds eye through violent images of the 1960s then it would be no ones fault but our own. We control the destiny of our town. May history remember us by our guts to defeat the naysayers and our unwillingness to accept anything but greatness!
For now the website will be used to link to our current petition to have the domed stadium built downtown (Click the link for more details) In the future the website will center around local Birmingham politics with polls about the latest topics, links to resources, discussion boards, and much more.
